The Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell is likely to get traded to the San Antonio Spurs this offseason. The lottery system in the NBA is a messiah for weak teams since it gives them an opportunity to land a star player. The weaker you are, the more chances you have of acquiring a quality player. The Spurs exploited the loophole in the system and intentionally got weaker. Their efforts paid off, and they signed a generational talent. Can they acquire Mitchell from the Cavaliers to add more talent to their roster?
The Louisville Cardinals product played 68 games for the Cavaliers last season and averaged 28.3 points, 4.4 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 38.6 percent from beyond the arc. What would the Spurs offer for Donovan Mitchell?
The Spurs are expected to offer Keldon Johnson, Doug McDermott, and one first-round pick each from the years 2025 and 2027 in exchange for the Cavaliers’ #45. The Cavaliers had a disappointing season, and they would prefer getting a good return for their guard.

Why would the Spurs like to sign Donovan Mitchell?
Mitchell had an incredible last season and the Spurs would love to pair him with Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs can also choose to tank again and rely on the lottery pick, but that looks very unlikely. It is expected that they would build around Victor and try to contend for the title.

Why would the Cavaliers trade-off Donovan Mitchell?
The Cavaliers would not trade the 27-year-old until and unless they are forced to do so. Even though the Cavaliers had a bad season, Mitchell was not the cause for the same. They are getting two quality players and two draft picks for their star here, which seems like a good deal.
