Her mother was the South African model, actress, and artist Geneviève Waïte. She has one brother, Tamerlane, and three half-siblings from his father’s other relationship.

After the divorce of her parents, Bijou Phillips was placed with a foster family in the city of Bolton, New York. She visited both of her parents regularly, who had both moved to houses nearby. Eventually, when she was in the third grade, her dad received custody of her and they moved to Lloyd Harbor, which is part of the town of Huntington.

When Phillips was 14, she made the choice to leave school and move into a New York City apartment with a housekeeper on Fifth Avenue. During her time in the city, she was known to have a wild life, full of partying, drugs, and alcohol. She often made headlines alongside other well-known socialites such as the Hilton sisters. At 17, after the passing of socialite Davide Sorrenti from a heroin overdose, Phillips decided to go to a rehabilitation clinic.

The title of the album alludes to her earlier days as a model, showing her unwillingness to go back to the same job.

Nevertheless, the same year, she got a major part in the movie Black and White with Robert Downey Jr., Jared Leto, Brooke Shields, and Elijah Wood.
